THE GEMSTONE FOR FEBRUARY -
AMETHYST |
|
A large discovery of amethyst was made during the 4th of July weekend, 1993, in Stow, Maine. Amethyst from this mine, adjacent to the White Mountain National Forest, is considered by many to be the finest available in the world. Amethyst is also mined in Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and Siberia. Amethyst is a purple-colored variety of quartz. Scientists have been unable to pinpoint the exact origin of amethyst's color. It's shades can range from a pale lavender-pink to nearly black-purple. Ideal amethyst color is deep medium purple with red-colored flashes. For those who are inclined to "overindulge," wearing an amethyst may be perfect because it is said to prevent overeating or too much drinking. Amethyst symbolizes protection, peace, piety, tranquillity, spiritual wisdom, humility, sincerity and contentment. Amethyst is also said to protect the wearer against deceit and treason, improve the complexion and prevent baldness. Royalty throughout the ages has adored the color of amethyst...hence, "royal purple." Amethyst can be cleaned using any commercially available jewelry cleaning solution, and a soft toothbrush. Finish by rinsing with water. am-e-thyst - n [ME amatiste, fr. L amethystus, fr Gk amethystos] (13c) : a clear purple or bluish violet variety of crystallized quartz that is much used as a jeweler's stone. (Webster's Collegiate Dictionary) |
